Nihdawin Homelessness Project:

The Nihdawin Homelessness Project is a collaborative effort between the John Howard Society of Thunder Bay and the Ontario Native Women’s Association. This project receives funding from the Homelessness Partnership Strategy and focuses on assisting Aboriginal women in conflict with the law, re-integrate back into the community. The inspiration for this initiative was the undeniable need for services for Aboriginal women in conflict with the law and their unique struggles in regards to re-integration and getting re-established in the community of Thunder Bay. John Howard’s focus and responsibilities involved in this project includes meeting women while still incarcerated, going through the court process, or at risk of homeless and assisting them with specific re-integration needs while assisting them with finding and maintaining permanent housing in the community. This project is unique in nature and a true collaborative effort between community organizations. Another exciting aspect of this project is the transition the John Howard Society has made in regards to housing female clients in our transitional housing unit.

Celebrating 60 years of prevention of crime though service, community education advocacy and reform.
