What is the John Howard Society?

The John Howard Society is a community based organization that supports people who are at risk or involved in the criminal justice system through service, reform, education and advocacy.

Who was John Howard?

John Howard was born September 2, 1726 in Lower Clapton in London, England. During travels he was imprisoned for six days in France which sparked the beginnings of his advocacy regarding prison conditions. In 1773 he took on the position of High Sheriff of Bedfordshire and soon after became shocked at the state of prisons throughout England. John Howard went on to publish, “The State of the Prisons”, in 1777 which included details on the prisons he visited, plans, maps and detailed instructions on essential improvements to be made.

If an individual requires service(s) that the JHS of Thunder Bay does not offer, staff will work with the individual and try to get them connected to the requested or required service(s).

Do I have to have had any conflict with the law to receive services or help?

No. Not all the services that the JHS of Thunder Bay provides are geared towards those in conflict with the law. There are other services and programs that any member from the community is free to access regardless of criminal status or history.

How do I get a referral to the Bail Supervision and Verification Program?

Only a lawyer can refer you directly to the program. Have your lawyer contact the Bail Supervisor at the John Howard Society.

What if I don’t have a lawyer? How can I be referred to the Bail Supervision and Verification Program?

See the Duty Council and ask that they refer you to the Bail Supervision and Verification Program.

Do I have to live at the JHS if I access the Bail Supervision and Verification Program.

No, not necessarily. The conditions created for a client to follow are created on an individual basis which may or may not result in the client having to reside here at the JHS or being allowed to return home or to another suitable residence. It is up to the discretion of the courts and the Bail Supervisor whether an individual will be required to reside here at the JHS or elsewhere.

How do I get a referral for other services that the JHS of Thunder Bay provides?

To get connected to other services call the JHS and you will be connected to someone who can answer your questions and get you connected to the services you request or require. Individuals can also drop-in on Tuesday’s or Thursday’s from 1 – 3pm to complete an intake to get connected to services. Individuals can also have other people refer them as well by calling the JHS or sending in a referral via fax, mail, or phone call.
